What is a Level 5 Finish?
In the drywall industry, finishes are graded from Level 0 to Level 5. While a Level 4 finish is the standard for most homes (where seams are taped, mudded, and sanded), a Level 5 Finish is a premium upgrade that involves applying a thin, skim coat of joint compound over the entire surface of the wall or ceiling.
This rigorous process eliminates any difference in texture between the drywall paper and the joint compound, creating an ultra-smooth, continuous surface.
When is a Level 5 Finish Necessary?
- High-Gloss or Semi-Gloss Paint: Glossy paints reflect light and highlight every tiny bump or ridge. A Level 5 finish is mandatory for these paints.
- Severe Lighting Conditions: If a room has large windows, skylights, or severe angled lighting (like wall sconces), shadows will exaggerate standard drywall seams. Level 5 prevents "flashing".
- High-End Homes & Galleries: For modern, minimalist designs where walls are the focal point, nothing less than Level 5 will do.
- Dark Paint Colors: Dark colors tend to show imperfections more than light colors.
